PJS Presents: Mark Isaacs - Solo Piano “New Standards”
Mark Isaacs’ solo piano program is a reimagining of much-loved classic melodies. All are new-to-jazz choices from the 1960s & 70s including by songwriters such as Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell and the late Burt Bacharach.
Mark’s acclaimed jazz output, over more than four decades now, has seen him collaborating with some of the most legendary international jazz stars, including Roy Haynes, Dave Holland and Kenny Wheeler, recording numerous lauded jazz albums (with two ARIA Award nominations for his previous Australian ‘Resurgence’ band), and touring the world including playing major festivals such as Tokyo Jazz Festival and Finland’s Pori Jazz.
Mark Isaacs also writes symphonies, concertos, records and performs as a classical pianist and conducts orchestras. He’s composed and conducted film & TV music and even writes songs (including the lyrics) and has been for many years a trained telephone crisis supporter at Lifeline Australia.
Classical music luminary Vladimir Ashkenazy described Mark’s classical work as “masterful” and “highly inventive and inspiring”.

TuneNoiseTune #5: HyperUniform / Rain No Rain
The Perth Jazz Society & Tone List's beloved series for avant-garde jazz and improvised music returns for its second season. The fifth concert in the series takes place at Bar Four5Nine on December 1, with doors opening at 7pm for a 7:30pm start. It features a double bill of HyperUniform (Gracie Smith - drums & Nathan Thompson - modular synthesizer), and Rain No Rain (Daniele Di Paola - drums, Kate Pass - double bass, Ronan Charles - piano & Ricki Malet - trumpet).
After a hyped set opening for Nika Mo's album launch in 2021, HyperUniform returns with unhinged intensity from two leading artists in noise and improvisation in Western Australia. Nathan Thompson, known for startling work at the intersection of experimental music, robotics and biological arts, clips triggers onto the drums of Gracie Smith (Tangled Thoughts of Leaving/The Noise & Vibration Council), whose virtuosic drumming combines the deftness of free jazz & improvisation with heavy-hitting sounds of avant-garde metal. The two sounds interact in human and post-human ways as the drums trigger shifts in the chaotic electronics. It's amazing.
Rain No Rain is the dash cam footage that you recovered from the car that you worked out belonged to you when you found some keys in your pocket. And then you sit on the steps and play it through. What a ride we had last night. Threading insane traffic, stopping for more drinks and friendly strangers at a bar in an unknown city and then parking to watch the sunrise before the batteries ran out. What the hell is this mess and where do we go from here? Well, it turns out we’re in a band called Rain No Rain and we’re booked at some place to play and I guess we’ll work it out then.

The Perth Jazz Society & Tone List's beloved series for avant-garde jazz and improvised music returns for its second season.
In a special partnership with the Australian Art Orchestra, the fourth concert of the TuneNoiseTune series presents a triple-bill of solos by members of the AAO, accompanied by an extraordinary local duo.
Join us upstairs in the striking setting of the Rechabite Hall as Peter Knight and Aviva Endean launch elaborate and virtuosic solo albums on Room40 working with instruments and electronics:
Peter Knight threads his trumpet through analogue tape loops, whilst Aviva uses wind instruments, effects pedals and sound design techniques to make elaborate collages.
Jasmin Wing-Yin Leung 梁詠然 explores site-specific resonances in tune with phenomenal erhu playing.
(.....mumblefunk), the duo of Simon Jeans and Daniel Susnjar, explore pan-genre improvisation on guitar and drums.
-
With an emphasis on improvisation, The Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) explores the meeting points between disciplines and cultures and imagines new musical forms to reflect the energy and diversity of 21st century Australia.
Founded by Paul Grabowsky AO in 1994 the AAO is one of Australia’s leading contemporary ensembles. Now led by daring composer/trumpeter/sound artist Peter Knight, its work constantly seeks to stretch genres and break down the barriers separating disciplines, forms and cultures.
It explores the interstices between the avant-garde and the traditional, between art and popular music, between electronic and acoustic approaches, and creates music that traverse the continuum between improvised and notated forms.
More details on the Australian Art Orchestra's activities in Western Australia can be found on the Audible Edge Festival website.

PJS Presents: Koi Kingdom (MELB) and Ghost Gum Reverb
KOI KINGDOM
Melbourne trio Koi Kingdom are coming to WA! Koi Kingdom released their second album, Pink Milk, in 2021 with a third album in the works. Their music is a concoction of many different influences served in the form of a drummerless trio. You might hear touches of Samba, Metal, Avant-garde Jazz under the structures of long compositional forms and adventurous improvisations. The three move in perfect synchronisation, balancing solid grooves and interwoven melodies over underlying and constantly changing time meters. This is Koi Kingdom's debut visit to WA so it's a special one.
Ghost Gum Reverb
Ghost Gum Reverb is an avant-garde improvising group, playing music that brings the expression and intensity of free jazz together with the and the hypnotic, trance-like repetitions of ambient music and the expanded sound pallet of free improvisation.
Comprised of Josten Myburgh (alto saxophone), Djuna Lee (double bass), Jameson Feakes (electric guitar) and Ben Greene (drums), the group has an idiosyncratic sound that defies genre, strengthened by the rich collaborative history of the performers across a variety of projects in the last eight years. Ghostly, fragile bowed strings meet sombre harmony, propulsive drumming and highly textured, circular-breathed saxophone phrases.
Ghost Gum Reverb have performed in ambient, jazz, electronic & pop contexts alike, including concerts at the Perth International Jazz Festival, Aesoteric (WA Museum Boola Bardip), Goolugatup Sounds and AM/EX.

7.40-8.40pm: The Artemis Orchestra
Gemma Farrell founded the Artemis Orchestra in 2017 with the hope of promoting people of marginalised genders in jazz as musicians, soloists and composers. Less than a quarter of all professional jazz musicians worldwide are female, and even less are non-binary and transgender, and this is something that we hope will change for the better in future. The goal is that having an ensemble like this, which is predominately made up of professional female musicians and includes non-binary musicians, will inspire young people of marginalised genders in Perth to consider taking on a career in jazz. In 2021 they released their debut album “The Elephant in the Room” with ten original works by Western Australian women. The album was RTRFM local feature album for a week in June, and their album launch sold out. It was also featured on ABC Jazz Radio and received a five-star review in Dingo Australian Jazz Journal.
9.20-10.20pm: Bad Whip
Bad Whip is the improvisational dance music duo of Alex Reid (drums) and Josiah Padmanabhan (synths) of prominent Perth outfit Grievous Bodily Calm. The partner setting allows the duo to explore pure improvisation and reactivity within a drum machine techno driven universe. Bad Whip acts as a means to create spontaneous composition and to test the boundaries of their musical connection formed over the last five years of intense writing, recording and performing together. Bad Whip have played festivals such as the Wave Rock Weekender and RTRFM’s Radiothon as well as numerous residency’s around town. The future will see Bad Whip recording their debut effort and further experimentation in the interface between produced and live music. Alex Reid - Drums, Drum Machine Josiah Padmanabhan - Synths

Juliana Areias: Originals
Perth Jazz Society invites Juliana Areias to present a full concert of original songs from her acclaimed “Bossa Nova Baby” album – fresh from the USA Top 100 Jazz Charts of 2020 – as well as to provide a hint of the new compositions she is cooking up for her next album in 2022.
Dubbed the “Bossa Nova Baby”, this year Juliana Areias will reach the milestone of 25 years living and performing outside Brazil. Juliana Areias’s original compositions explore her artistic journey – from her birth country of Brazil, where she grew up and was personally introduced to the masters of Bossa Nova, until today living in Perth, where she settled in 2007. During 2021, unable to tour nationally and internationally due to covid restrictions, she has performed a series of emblematic concerts at The Ellington Jazz Club, North Cottesloe Beach, Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre, Perth Festival, and as a soloist with The Perth Symphony Orchestra at the 2021 Western Australian of The Year Awards. All these experiences have inspired her new songs.
Juliana Areias is extremely proud and enthusiastic about the quality of the WA arts scene and is always honoured to share the stage with the groovy cats of her “Bossa Nova Baby Band”, featuring a blazing line-up of sensational musicians, and showcasing the amazing talent and cultural diversity we are so lucky to have in Perth: Paul Millard – sax/flute, Joshua de Silva – seven string hybrid guitars, Bronton Ainsworth – drums, and Brazilian percussionist Rafael Medeiro de Souza.
Juliana Areias has performed on major stages internationally including the Sydney Opera House, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London, the Green Room in New York, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Auckland Festival in New Zealand and the legendary Beco das Garrafas in Rio de Janeiro.
Now it is your turn to be entranced by the authentic musical stylings of the Bossa Nova Baby herself, Juliana Areias.
– “The toast of the Perth Jazz Scene. The release of Bossa Nova Baby has elevated her above a mere covers singer or bossa specialist. The singer excels in an elegant co-composed duet (Belas Artes) with Australia’s finest Brazilian-oriented 7-string guitarist, Doug de Vries”.– The Australian – Tony Hillier
– “It’s bossa that plays soccer with Jazz – as it has since the 60’s – and scoring a goal. Bossa Nova Baby” is a welcome surprise of great Brazilian music, made far away.” – O GLOBO– Brazil– Antonio Carlos Miguel – Music critic and judge member of the Latin Grammy Award.
– “The idea of mixing styles and cultures is reflected in Areias’ life and her music” – Daily Record, USA – Bill Nutt

Artemis Orchestra “The Elephant in the Room” Album Launch
Join us for the launch of our debut album "The Elephant In The Room," an album of original music by Western Australian women.
The Artemis Orchestra was founded by Gemma Farrell in 2017, with the hope of promoting people of marginalised genders in jazz as musicians, soloists and composers. Less than a quarter of all professional jazz musicians worldwide are female, and even less are non-binary and transgender and this is something which we hope will change for the better in future. The goal is that having an ensemble like this, which is predominately made up of professional female musicians, and also includes non-binary musicians, will inspire young people of maginalised genders in Perth to consider taking on a career in jazz. The Orchestra has performed at the Charles Hotel, at the Four5Nine Bar, the Ellington Jazz Club, His Majesty’s Theatre, Somerville Auditorium and the Rechabite. They have collaborated with the Perth Jazz Society, and with the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra, twice making up a band of WAYJO’s young women and non-binary members, with Artemis’ professional musicians. They have also performed for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Perth International Jazz Festivals. They have performed the music of Shannon Barnett, Kristin Berardi, Jenna Cave, Louise Denson, Sandy Evans, Gemma Farrell, Sally Greenaway, Alice Humphries, Maddie Ivy, Amelia Jutilane, Andrea Keller, Ellen Kirkwood, Alana Macpherson, Kate Pass, Venessa Perica and Candice Susnjar. The band has also hosted composition workshops and reading sessions for band members, and will continue to do so in future.

During the completion of his jazz piano bachelor’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, Almazan immersed himself in the realm of orchestral composition studying instrumentation and orchestration. As a performer, Almazan has developed a personal voice through the electric manipulation of the acoustic piano in live and studio settings. He has toured his music extensively as well as accompanied artists such as Linda May Han Oh, Terence Blanchard, Gretchen Parlato, John Hollenbeck, Mark Guiliana, Dave Douglas, Avishai Cohen and Ambrose Akinmusire among others.

ZARAPITO and Number Junky
ZARAPITO
Michael Pignéguy (drums) combines forces with Brodie Stewart (keyboards) and Joe Powell (elec. bass) to launch ZARAPITO on Thursday, May 20. The group’s focus is predominantly original compositions and arrangements by group members in the electro/fusion realm. While Michael and Brodie have worked together before in The Awakenings Ensemble and Brodie and Joe are members of The Persuasion, this Perth Jazz Society show will see the three artists share the stage for the first time in this new trio format. Certainly a unique occasion on the 2021 Perth music calendar, not one to miss!
NUMBER JUNKY
Formed in early 2020 through a mutual love of numbers and odd-time signatures, Number Junky is a guitar-led trio that plays warped jazz standards and number-crunching original music while retaining a focus on lyrical melodies and lush harmony. The group is made up of experienced jazz improvisers, Danish guitarist Kristian Borring, Zac Grafton on bass, and Peter Evans on drums. They recently recorded an 11 track album of Borring's original compositions and arrangements, which also featured New York pianist Fabian Almazan on a few tracks.

Engadine Trio and Radio Repairs
ENGADINE TRIO
Engadine Trio is the brainchild of James Sewell, Kane Shaw and Ben Griffith blending modern jazz with folksy Australian elements. Originally inspired to explore the space of a drumless trio influenced by artists such as Paul Motion, Julien Wilson Trio and Bill Frisell, the group has recently released its first EP.
RADIO REPAIRS
Original jazz quartet Radio Repairs - Ricki Malet (trumpet), Ronan Charles (piano), Dan Dipaola (drums) and Phil Waldron (double bass) - have now racked up 20 odd years of playing and writing instrumental music together. If you could make a new music machine out of deeply scratched jazz records and old photographs of your mother when she still smoked, and then tied it all together with a genuine vintage snapped high-wire that a circus left behind, then you’d pretty much get the taste of their blend of chilled noir balladry and the kind of elastic groove and improv that comes from so many years of playing together. Not to be missed.
